Use of AI in workplaces grows—76% of offices worldwide use ChatGPT, number of users nearly doubles in 2024

A new study by DeskTime has found that use of AI in the workplace is rising. By the end of 2024, ChatGPT was used in 76% of offices worldwide. The data suggests that artificial intelligence tools are quickly maturing into a core part of individual and departmental workflows, with companies eagerly embracing the benefits AI offers. 

2024 saw significant growth in individual AI usage, with 34.9% of employees using ChatGPT as of the end of the year. This marks a sizeable increase from 19.1% in December 2023, meaning that the adoption of generative AI among the workforce has nearly doubled over the past year. 

Not only are more people using ChatGPT, but they also spend increasingly more time on it. Compared to 2023, employees spent 37.2% more time on ChatGPT in 2024. When including other popular AI tools, a 50% increase in time spent on AI tools can be observed.

The growing use of AI in workplace: A look at four major economies

DeskTime’s study took a closer look at ChatGPT adoption separated across four major economies: India, Mexico, Spain, and the USA.

While every country saw double-digit growth in employee AI usage, Mexico and India have made the biggest strides with growth of 19.93% and 19.26%, respectively. Meanwhile, adoption in the US has been slower, showing only an 11.19% increase. 

India also stands out as the clear global leader in ChatGPT adoption with over half of all employees showing use of AI in office work, across more than 90% of offices in the country. 

The doubling of employees using ChatGPT is significant, as it points to a new phase in AI’s lifecycle, where it is no longer a new technology used by early adopters, but rather an established tool that’s steadily permeating a multitude of workflows. The growing adoption rate suggests that—globally—1 in 3 people have found ways to enhance their professional performance through AI.

The sample included 17,780 employees across 437 companies that use the DeskTime time tracking tool. The data was collected from January 2023 to December 2024.
